Caspian ecosystem unaffected by Gunashli offshore accident

A total of 125,435 analyses have been carried out into some 98,108 samples from atmosphere, precipitation, surface water, soil and radiation, said the annual report of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan.

According to the report, 52,685 analytic, eco-toxicological, and microbiological analyses have been done into 4,775 samples from the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian. Studies have been and are still being conducted in those parts of the sea in order to detect possible ecological aftereffects of the Gunashli offshore field accident on marine life. The result of the analyses revealed that the marine ecosystem is unaffected.

 With regard to the environmental protection, 3,132 acts and 983 protocols were complied, and 1,640 obligatory instructions were given in 2015. Fines worth AZN 1,294,030 were imposed in 910 cases and 847,358 claims were filed in 419 cases. 114 of the 346 cases submitted to law enforcement agencies, 271 of the 471 cases submitted to executive groups, 45 of the 166 cases submitted to courts were considered and necessary measures were taken,” said the report.
